Greetings everyone! I thought of new series of blogs for the book of Hebrews and calling it When The High Priest Sat Down. I hope to emphasize how Jesus is the fulfillment of all the Old Testament sacrifices.
In our class on the book of Hebrews, one of our class assignments was on Jesus’ High Priestly ministry in the book of Hebrews. I thought I would share what I wrote for each of those assignments on here. There are a total of ten.
The first of these is on Jesus’ divinity. Here is what I wrote on this.
The Hebrew writer calls Jesus “the Son the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact representation of His being…” (1:3). There are at least eight different Old Testament passages that talk about claims about Jesus. Notice how these define Jesus’ divinity.
The first Old Testament scripture is Psalm 2:7. In Gerald Paden’s book on Hebrews he says that Jesus is appointed heir of all things. Heirs are appointed to receive their inheritance. This refers to the Messiah because it specks of God becoming Jesus’ Father, and Jesus becomes God’s Son. Jesus, the Son; God, the Father; and the Holy Spirit were all equal throughout all of eternity. When Jesus left Heaven to come to earth to become a man, He became God’s Son, and God became His Father. This shows Jesus is the holy divine Son of God.
The second set of Old Testament scriptures are 2nd Samuel 7:14 and 2nd Chronicles 17:13. These scriptures talk about God being Jesus’ Father, and Jesus being God’s Son. These say, according to Paden’s book, Jesus is the Messiah and is Lord of all things. He is the creator of all things. It is through Jesus the God made all things. These show Jesus’ divinity in that God is the Father and Jesus is the Son.
The third Old Testament scripture is from Psalm 97:7, which talks about all of God’s heavenly angels worship Jesus. Therefore Jesus is the radiance of all things, the radiance of God’s glory (according to Paden’s Hebrews commentary). This shows Jesus’ divinity, because everyone and everything has been created by and through Jesus. Therefore everyone and everything owes it’s allegiance and praise to Jesus.
The forth Old Testament scripture is Psalm 104:4. It speaks of God creating the angels through Jesus. Even angels’ wings. So “Jesus is the exact representation of God’s being. Jesus is the representation of divine nature” (Paden’s Hebrews commentary). The Greek word for “exact representation” is literally “character”. So Jesus is the exact representation of divinity. This shows Jesus’ divinity, because Jesus is the exact representation of God the Father and is the bodily form and representation of God the Father.
The fifth set of Old Testament scriptures are Isaiah 61:1 and 3. These passages say “Jesus is ‘sustaining all things by His powerful words’. ” Jesus is upheld as righteous. His kingdom will last forever. These passages show Jesus’ divinity and holiness in that He is holy and cant’ have any fellowship with wickedness.
The sixth Old Testament passage is Psalm 102:25-27. “The Messiah is the One who ‘provided purification for sins’. It is a fact that sins exist and sin muse be purified if man is going to have a relationship with God”. This shows Jesus’ divinity because He is holy and makes all of His true followers to be holy. He is holy and is able to make us holy as well.
The seventh Old Testament set of scriptures are from Psalm 110:1 and Joshua 10:24. These talk about God seating Jesus at His right hand, the right hand of power. And God will make Jesus’ enemies a footstool for His feat. This also says “Christ accomplished the sacrifice for man’s purification, He “sat down at the right had of the Majesty in heaven”. This shows Jesus’ divinity because He is holy, pure, and powerful. God has placed His Son, at His right hand, the right hand of power, the place of power.
The eighth and final Old Testament reference is from Psalm 103:20. It talks about angels being spirits that serve God’s holy people. They serve those who will inherit salvation from God and His holy and divine Son. This shows Jesus’ divinity, because the angels serve Him, serve God, and serve those who follow Him. They serve all who have a connection with Him.
I hope all of that made since. Any comments, questions, or anything at all? If there is anything anyone who like to say or ask please send them via the comments secti0n on this blog. Thank you all very much. God bless. Grace and Peace.
